The National Anti-Illegal Mining Operations Secretariat (NAIMOS) has conducted another major operation against illegal mining activities in the Eastern Region, targeting sites in Oda Nkwanta, Birim Central Municipality, and the Akanteng–Asamankese area.

The coordinated exercise, conducted on Monday, October 13, 2025, was part of ongoing national efforts to clamp down on illegal mining, which continues to destroy forests, farmlands, and vital water bodies.

Acting on credible intelligence, the NAIMOS task force first entered Oda Nkwanta, where three excavators were found in active use at an illegal mining site. Upon the task force’s arrival, the miners abandoned their equipment and fled into the nearby bush, leaving behind personal belongings and other machinery.

Two (2) of the excavators were operating at the site, while a third was discovered hidden in thick vegetation. Investigations revealed extensive destruction of cocoa farms and the diversion or blockage of a river channel flowing directly into the River Birim, a key water source in the region.

Items seized from the site included 5 motorbikes, 4 excavator batteries, and 5 computer monitors.

Following the operation, NAIMOS reaffirmed its commitment to restoring Ghana’s lands and rivers through aggressive enforcement and collaboration with local authorities.
