A high-powered delegation from Sierra Leone’s Public Sector Reform Unit (PSRU) has embarked on a learning mission in Ghana, seeking firsthand insights into the country’s evolving mineral and mining reforms. The visit highlights a growing wave of regional collaboration, as African nations look to strengthen governance and maximize the benefits of their natural resources.
Leading the delegation, Mr. Sulaiman Phoray-Musa, Director at the Ministry of Mines and Mineral Resources, expressed keen interest in Ghana’s regulatory framework following a detailed presentation by officials from the Ministry.
The session unpacked the Ministry’s mandate, ongoing policy reforms, key interventions, and the real challenges encountered in regulating the mining sector. It also shed light on Ghana’s international commitments and the coordinated efforts between the Ministry and its agencies to ensure responsible resource management and equitable allocation.
At the Minerals Commission, the Sierra Leonean team was taken through Ghana’s licensing regime, local content promotion strategies, regulatory compliance systems, critical pillars underpinning transparency and accountability in the sector.
To bridge theory with practice, the delegation travelled to Zijin Golden Ridge Limited (Akyem Mines) at New Abirem in the Eastern Region. There, General Manager Mr. Agyeman Okyere revealed plans to establish additional exploration ventures aimed at extending the lifespan of the mine. According to him, the expansion is expected to boost Ghana’s socio-economic development, create jobs, and enhance operational infrastructure.
The visit culminated in an on-site tour of the mining pits and processing plants, offering the team a rare, up-close look at modern mining operations.
Clearly impressed, Mr. Phoray-Musa, on behalf of the delegation, expressed gratitude to the Ministry, the Minerals Commission, and the mining company for their openness and knowledge-sharing. He commended Ghana’s strides in natural resource management, describing the experience as both insightful and inspiring for Sierra Leone’s reform agenda.
End.
