The fight to protect Ghana’s water bodies gained renewed momentum on Wednesday, October 15, 2025, when the Blue Water Guards of the Tarkwa Nsuaem Constituency launched a decisive operation at Wassa Agona, a community near the River Bonsa.
The raid, targeted illegal mining activities believed to be polluting the river and degrading surrounding farmlands.
During the operation, the task force destroyed in total, nine (9) pumping machines were seized, while thirteen (13) others were burnt on site.
Additionally, eighteen (18) “Chanfan” machines, commonly used for gold extraction, were also set ablaze to prevent further use.
The Blue Water Guards’ operation forms part of a broader community-led campaign to safeguard River Bonsa, one of the area’s vital water sources, from the increasing threat of galamsey.
The team reaffirmed its determination to sustain similar crackdowns across the Tarkwa Nsuaem area until the destruction of water bodies and farmlands by illegal mining is completely halted.
